Mr D'z Route 66 Diner
About this place
The building tells the first half of the story. Mr D'z occupies the former Kingman Café and Kimo Shell Station, which opened in 1939 on Route 66. In 1991, Scott and Roy Dunton, owners of the Dunton Motors dealership next door, bought the café and gas station and remodeled it into a 1950s-style diner. In 2000, they leased it to Armando and Michelle Jimenez, and the Las Vegas chef moved to Kingman to take over the grill.
Root Beer, Pizza and Diner Classics
The diner is best known for its homemade root beer, pizza and milkshakes. Beyond those, the menu covers traditional diner fare: burgers, chicken-fried steak, patty melts, chili, sandwiches and salads, with breakfast served all day. Sides include french fries, sweet potato fries, coleslaw and onion rings, and hot dogs are on the list as well. The record-shaped menus also include fajitas and grilled tequila chicken, a nod to the Southwest.
A Brush With Fame
In May 2006, the diner got a burst of national attention when Oprah Winfrey and her friend Gayle King stopped in on a road trip. Winfrey liked the root beer enough to give bottles to her studio audience.
